The dictionary definition of the word [propaganda] is
: the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person
: ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one’s cause or to damage an opposing cause; also: a public action having such an effect.
We equate the word propaganda with totalitarianism.
Global mass media is a one-way communication stream. Watching television or listening to the radio – promotes one point of view. Unless the program allows for dissenting views, you are listening to one side of a story. As a viewer or listener, you are subservient to the subliminal. They are messing with your mind. At least the written word requires you to analyze and challenge the message coming to you. The Internet opens a world of dialogue, where ideas can elicit commentary, opposing views, and reaffirmation of the message. It is essential that we move beyond the one-way electronic media to a new platform where voices can engage in open communications. It is the best hope for overcoming the dangers of propaganda.
